Rook beside the king, knight behind the rook. The rook checks from h7; the knight on f6 guards it and takes g8 away. It goes back to shatranj, the older form of chess in which the rook and the knight were the strongest pieces. The diagram is the position after Rh7#, with every flight square of the king marked and the piece that guards it. One of twelve.
Named Mates is a numbered series of twelve: the checkmates that have a name of their own, from No. 01 to No. 12.
